Always use the code on the supplier's invoice. A bank may use a different code for a branch or a currency, and codes change. Confirm with the supplier by a second channel before the first payment.

How to read a SWIFT code

A SWIFT code, also called a BIC, has eight or eleven characters. The first four identify the bank, the next two the country, the next two the location, and the optional last three a branch. CHASUS33 is JPMorgan Chase (CHAS), United States (US), New York (33). A code ending XXX is the bank's head office.

What you need for a SWIFT payment

  • The recipient's account name exactly as the bank holds it
  • The account number, or IBAN where the country uses one
  • The bank's SWIFT code
  • The bank's name and address
  • A reference, usually the invoice number

Helm shows the fee, the rate and the arrival date before you approve a SWIFT payment, and tracks each stage to arrival; see International Payments. The guide to SWIFT, ACH and Fedwire explains how a SWIFT payment moves.
